Most of can remember as children our parents chasing us down to brush our teeth. As adults, most of us have fallen into a good habit of keeping our teeth clean, but many of us also tend to overdo it. Some of us brush too often but most tend to brush too hard. Surprisingly you need very little pressure with your toothbrush in order to remove plaque from your teeth.
The Bad Effects Of Over Brushing
If you brush too often or brush too hard it can begin to have a negative effect on your teeth over time. Brushing too hard can remove the protective layer of enamel on your teeth, causing them to become sensitive to hot and cold foods and drinks. It can also cause your gums to recede, exposing the roots, which can lead to a lot of pain while eating and brushing.
How Often Should You Brush?
It is a good habit to brush after every meal, but you can maintain good oral health by only brushing in the morning and just before bed. As long as you brush your teeth twice a day, your teeth should remain in good health.
How Long Should I Brush For?
You should aim to brush your teeth for about four minutes. Ideally it should take you two minutes to brush your top teeth and two minutes to brush your bottom teeth. Electric toothbrushes are great because they have a built in timer.
Try dividing your mouth up into four sections (top right, top left, bottom right and bottom left). Also, do not forget to relax your jaw so that you can reach the teeth all the way at the back of your mouth. And, as always, do not forget to floss at least once a day.
